I just started Topamax two weeks ago. I started on the advice of my Dr. and really did not look into any of the SEs. I have yet to notice any of the big ones folks mention... cognitive, irritability, memory etc. But the thing that really bugs me is the Flat, Nasty Soda taste thing. Will that ever go away or am I stuck with that for ever???

Welcome Raovac

To answer your question for most of us the answer is no....however some of us say that after awhile they have gotten the taste buds back.

Guess that's not much of an answer....so I guess that's as much hopeful optimsm as I can give.
Althoug I would be more concerned about the spelling issues

You guys are the best! RJ and Sharik- thank you both for the links. They were a big help help! Turns out that our student went back to the Children's Hospital and he was being over medicated! Too much of a good thing, I guess. Thank goodness for this forum! Thanks, again!

Can anyone give advice about what over the counter meds can be safely taken for sinus pain while taking Topomax? Not sure if I'd get an answer back soon enough from my Dr's office to help. The sinuses are causing migraines, plus, and I need some relief but don't want to take something that might adversely interact. :Help, anyone? Thanks!

SPACEY, I have a friend who takes Topa for migraine and has lost 50 lbs but over a 9 month period. She is keeping it off too for 4 more months.("permanent weight loss") She does attribute it to the Topamax completely. She does not excersise. Apparantly over time, there is a loss of appetite, but it is not instant. I am on my 4th week of Topa, and I have noticed dramatically that I am not so "food focused" because I am usually eating every 2-3 hours to avoid a headache, and this can cause weight gain! Especially because this can be "on the go eating". I am still eating, but not driven to binge and overeat- it is weird. I have definitely had an overall reduction in headache, which seems to reduce my carb eating?(thats me) What I am hearing from people about the weight loss thing is patience is the key! It is often prescribed specifically for weight loss for patients who are experienceing weight gain while on other psychiatric drugs. I am with you- I am putting up with tingling hands and mouth, irritibility, word problems, etc.. in hope that the reduction in migraine AND weight will improve my life. Good luck.

RJ, Thanks for the words of encouragement about the major weight loss! Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Soooo many things are starting to taste weird to me, and my appetite aeems to be waning, yeah!.
I finally broke down yesterday and took a Tylenol sinus pill for my headache. Not to be gross, but I had a major problem with, um, shall we say, my intestines, all last night and again today. Is this a normal SE, or maybe a combination of the meds? I am still so new to the Topamax and not real sure of what I can and can't do.
Thanks everyone!

speaking of sinuses.....
I've seen alot of mention from the board but not on any official "side effect" lists from Topamax, alot of users are having sinus problems. I personally have been seen starting Topa. Hopefully, there isnt any long term effects on the sinuses. SO, You just take another PILL for that. Thank Goodness, they color code pills...this one is usually RED!
Oh yea...The Good News... Last weekend, I just couldnt resist I ordered a beer with friends, the first half tasted fairly bad but it got better and the second beer tasted great! I only had 2 but hey, it was nice for a change!!

Dear Spacey,

You said you were having a sinus headache, not a migraine. However, A lot of times when I have a migraine, I will also have intestinal problems. It is actually a s/e of migraines not medication.

There was a study posted somewhere on WHA of migrainers that confused their sinus headaches with migraines but I couldn't find it. I am not a doc but it sounds like maybe you had a migraine and didn't realize it. Did you take a triptan first to see if it helped? Migraines can also cause your nazal passage to get stuffed up and your eyes to tear up. This happens to me on occation and when I take a triptan (amerge) it always relieves those s/e but doesn't help with the intestinal thing.

I hope your feeling better

Hello to everyone on the board! Rj, Princess, Kj, Gabbysdad, and everyone new too!

Sorry, I haven't been on in a while. I have been on here and there but haven't been in the mood to type much. I had to have surgery on my shoulder and the doo-daa drugs they gave me also left me with migraines. So, I have been on rotation, doo-daa drugs for the shoulder then triptans for the head. My head feels good right now....took an amerge a few hours ago but now the shoulder hurts....so in a few hours I will be able to take the shoulder meds. What a life. I can't wait until I can drive and go back to work.

Someone of was having problems sleeping (I can't remember who, sorry. My Neuro has me take a very low dose of Zanaflex (1/2 of 2mgs) every night, along with my topa. It is non addictive and is some type of muscle relaxer. He actually started me on it a long time ago before the topa because he said that it would help with tension. All I know is that it knocks me right out and I sleep all night. So, I have never had any problems taking topa at night.

I am currently taking 100 mgs at night and 25 during the morning. Since, I started taking the little extra in the morning it has helped reduce my migraines even more. I didn't even have any s/e at all when I increased my dose.

As far as weight loss goes...I really haven't lost much weight since I have been on topa since August 05. Maybe 5-8lbs but I really didn't want to loose any weight either as my weight is really just where it should be for my height. I also intentionally eat extra food just to keep the weight on. LOL!

I know several of you mentioned your hair falling out. My pharmacist recommended a vitamin called Biotin and its very inexpensive. I take one a day and it really has helped me.

Sorry for the long post....I had a lot to catch up on....Happy New Year to everyone too!

Skye

Ali11-

Teri Roberts knows a TON and I have found her to be very valid in her concerns and decisions. Maybe you shouldn't feel so threatened if she is deleting you- just educated. She may be sending you a message (yoo hoo). Why aren't you in cahoots with her?

Are you going to suggest that we tie rulers to our heads again with rubber bands or bandanas? I am trying to imagine myself walking around at work with a ruler plastered to the side of my head...I'm imagining the conversation now..."Hello Mr. Johnson - come on in....I am glad you could meet with me today...I need to discuss your daughters behavior...Oh - this ol' thing - it's just a ruler ....I wear it to prevent migraines - prescribed by a migraine specialist named Ali11 Hotbird. What? You thought is was a radio receptor? NO! No really we are a respectable organization and I AM a professional ...."

I might be on Topamax Ali, but I'm not a lu-lu. OK?

Thanks for the soliciting - but hey...No thanks,
RJ

PS. How do you afford that channel? Do people cut into their head before they strap the ruler on it?

Hi Everyone!!!!

Skye - sorry to hear about your shoulder. I hope you feel better soon and get out to zippin’ around. I liked how you used the term "doo da"! Sums it up, doesn't it?

Spacey - you have a great question. I haven't been on because I have been traveling for work. I was going to post even though I saw you took a Tylenol cold. I have a prescription that my MD had given me of Guaifensen PSE 120, produced by Entex. I took that and for two days (this was over a month ago) and I had irregular heartbeats along with NO water in my mouth what-SO-ever. Oh my garsh!!! Lizard tongue. There was a desert in my mouth... I am pretty sure it was the Sahara. It impaled the sinus infection alright and just about wiped me out with it (diagnosed because the substance I was spitting was the color of the WHA board screen - lovely I know. Had to share. ). I will never be taking THAT along with Topa again. In fact, I will not be taking sinus meds with Topa anymore after that experience. I don't think my body does so well with them. When I entered it on line with the drug interaction directory the "PSE" did have a possible interaction with the Topa. Enough – no more.

Skye has a great point on the sinus headaches I want to add. Nausea and that funky thing Spacey had going on (and we’ll leave it there) – could have been from a migraine attack though and not from a sinus infection. Best way to tell – is to pay close attention to the next one.

I found Topa to thicken my mucous though. It antagonizes my asthma too a bit. The best thing to do - is drink a lot of water and tea (decaf) at night. Thins it out.

Hope this will help some of you. Gmax - as long as you drink. You'll be all good.

Take care everyone,
RJ

Hey Everyone! Good Afternoon- where ever you are!
Skyestruck- I'm not positive that it was a sinus headache the other day. But it seemed to be. It was unlike any other migraine I've ever had. the Tylenol sinus did help, in fact I had to take it two days in a row, with the same SE each day, but it was worth it to keep my face from throbbing off of my neck. I will keep close tabs on my headaches and try to notice the differences because you made some very valid points. Thank you!
Gmax, lucky you, getting to enjoy a couple of beers! I am jealous!!! The last couple of times I tried that (before Topa) I was struck down with a migraine. (Maybe I'll get brave again in a few months and give another go. HA!
Pengy, My face doesn't get numb, but my tongue does. However, I've only been on this medicatione for 12 days now and am positive that this too, shall pass! Everyone seems to get past the funky SE's after awhile, and remember, you are not alone! This is a great group with many a shoulder to offer. Chin up!
RJ, thanks for the heads up about the meds that your DR prescribed, I'll be sure to tell mine not to go there! Ugh, everytime I look at this page color I just think, "Yuck!" Some side effects just aren't worth it, are they? Water, water, water. Gonna try the decaf tea tonight! Thanx!!!!

Hi guys,
I just come from that "padded ruler" site, wow, that felt like 1950, padded cells, electrocute me stuff. But, I went...you never know, sometimes killing a migraine is worth it you know. I'm having a weird eye-day right now. No headache yet, just extremely heavy eyes that seem not to want to focus. I've been at the PC working alot, that could be at fault. Lost a good friend to cancer yesterday, had many tears today, duh...that probably didnt help. MEMORY... Thats my main S/E. I've been 9 days at 200mg without a headache ONE! I was hoping to stay at 150mg, but still had headache 25% of the time. Dramatic improvement from the normal DAILY headache though. I thought I had a personality change, but decided I just didnt know who I was WITHOUT a headache...... wow, isnt that scarey?

Gmax -

I am so sorry to hear about your friend. So so sorry. I hope that the Topa works at 100% for you now too. Gmax - no padded rulers. ok? It is just a bad day..... Ali is being kind of creepy. WHA will adjust the posting..... I tend to Trust Teri Roberts. She is a huge patient advocate and a migrainer herself. If she is evaporating this person there is probably a VERY GOOD REASON, I am sure.

I am so sorry again. I am thinking about you.

Hugs,
RJ

Gmax, sorry to hear about your friend. I had a neighbor die unexpectedly this week. Boy, grief and loss like this really causes us to put things in perspective.
I have been way off my schedule this week, and am having alot of difficulty sleeping. I have NEVER had sleep problems, and I am pretty sure it is the Topa.
Lets hope we can all have better days in Febuary! Reading through the posts it seems like alot of us are having a hard time with headaches and sinus problems. I have found that when I am not sure if it is sinus headache or Migraine, that I start with 800mg of Motrin or Ibuprofin, and if that dosen't work, I take the triptan. Has anyone had any luck with Midrin? Hang in there everyone!!

Dear Spacey and everyone else,

I found the article on sinus headaches and migraines so I am going to try to paste the link. I am horrible at this so if you see a bunch of edits, you know why LOL!
www.w-h-a.org/wha2/Newsite/resultsnav.asp?color=C2D9F2&idContentNews=767

I thought that I too had a sinus headache (I posted it a few pages back) because it was on the opposite side f my head and felt different than my normal migraines. I went to my asthma doc who is also an alergist and he said that I did not have a sinus infection and that my headache was in no way caused by my sinus. I then went to my neuro and he confirmed that my new headache was a migraine....even though it was different from my normal migraines.

Also, if you are having sinus headaches, please be very careful because they can turn into sinus infections. You might want to see a doctor spacey I hope you are feeling better!

Sheila, So sorry to hear about your friend. It must have been a really hard week for you. Have you been going crazy with the rain? (you live near Atlanta, right?) I think everybody I know has a headache right now.

Skye,
Your post about the "sinus headache" was exactly right. I even went to an ENT a year ago before went to my current neuro- went through all the tests, including a CT scan. I was sure I had sinus problems. Took Motrin Sinus by the box-loads for years! The first thing my neurologist said was the common myth is that people think they are having sinus headaches when they actually have migraines. He said that people that have migraines, also have different kinds of migraines, and usually don't have a lot of sinus problems, but have a lot of different areas where there migraine symptoms are. He agreed with the article that you (Skye) posted, that many headaches we think are sinus are actually migraines. A word or warning- we may be causing rebound headaches by trying to take over the counter meds to treat a sinus headache when it actually isn't a sinus headache. We need to be very careful. I took so much Motrin Sinus for so many years and it worked so well (sort of like an addiction) that I know now that I just can't keep it in my house or I'll use it. Skye, thanks for the post on sinuses- you made it very clear. The article is great. Lydia

Sheila -

I thought about you last night while I was doing the dishes and thinking about "life". You popped into my head. I hope that you are feeling somewhat better - stronger at least. Times like yours are a challenge. I hope that your migraines are subdued for you here for a while - at least to give you that much of a break. Best advice someone gave me lately is to be like a willow tree......flow whichever direction you feel the wind hurling against you. It's alright to do sometimes. Sure has helped.

Wishing everything to feel better soon for you,
RJ
